May 22, 2008 -- LifeLock CEO sued in 3 states

If you've ever seen or heard a LifeLock ad, you know that CEO Todd Davis proudly announces his Social Security number – essentially challenging thieves to steal his identity.

Clark is often asked about whether or not Davis' company offers a legitimate service. First off, yes, LifeLock is a legitimate company. However, Clark doesn't believe they're very effective at protecting your identity. Now the CEO is being sued in Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia by customers who say his service doesn't work.

LifeLock's business model is based on repeatedly putting fraud alerts on your credit files. These alerts are meant to raise a flag to potential creditors so they carefully verify an applicant's identity. Too often, however, the alerts are ignored and credit is extended anyway to thieves using your name.

The truth is there's no perfect way to prevent ID theft. In the event of a theft, the banks and credit-card companies know it's cheaper to deal with write-offs after the fact than to institute industry-wide practices to end the threat before it begins.

So what's the best available solution? Do a credit freeze. This will shut a criminal down cold when it comes to applying for credit in your name. They can still take a card from your wallet and charge it up, though. But that's the least harmful crime in this arena.

Credit freezes are not a panacea and can be somewhat of hassle to establish. That's why Clark has compiled his credit freeze guide to help you through the process. When you do want to use credit again, "thawing" your records can take from a few minutes to a few days, depending on your state of residence.

What others are saying

  • Credit Freeze - Experian Exception
Sounds to me from the excerpt from the Experian site that freezing your creidt does not stop all inquiries. I'm concerned by the the statement you information may be used for "pre-screening" purposes. ---
    Security Freeze exceptions
Placing a "security freeze" on your credit report prohibits us from releasing any information in your credit report without your express authorization, except to those with whom you have an existing account or a collection agency acting on behalf of the existing account, for purposes of reviewing (account maintenance, monitoring, credit line increases and account upgrades and enhancements) or collecting the account. Your information also may be used for the purposes of prescreening as provided for by the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, even if a security freeze is on the report.
  • Other Identity Theft Protection Options?
While I wouldn't trust Lifelock with my identity, I would like some sort of protection! Bank protection on credit cards is not enough. I'm reviewing the Identity Theft Shield product by Prepaid Legal Services. Any thoughts on this product? They do restoration as well as monitoring not only your credit but criminal databases, etc.
  • Thanks for the Info on Credit Freeze!
I believe credit freeze is the way to go! It stops anyone, including yourself, from checking your credit report without your authorization, i.e. the temporary lift with the PIN code. And its the cheapest!

Locking up your credit file seems to me worth more than any insurance policy. If these credit monitoring services were any good, why would they have to offer insurance???

Think about it? How could "monitoring" your credit file be better than "locking" it up???
  • Theft of Social Security Number
My neice, age 20, has had her SS# stolen from work. Her number was used by someone in another state on a job.
IRS sent her a letter informing her, can she get a new social security number out of the SSI Administration?
    Thanks,
  • Article not completely helpful
The reason I say the article is not helpful is it is just a complaint with no help to me the consumer. Good companies get sued all the time for things all the time as well as bad companies. I would like a recommended solution to Identity Theft. So don't use Life Lock is the message and let the theives abuse me with no sort of protect? Are the other ones suggested by others any good? Do you recommend idsafewatch or is it got issues but since it doesn't offer a 1 million dollar guarantee it is okay because you will be on you own if they fail. I hate these articles that provide information to panic us and give no solution. I look at this show to provide real guidance.

  • Credit Card Fraud
My parents have been loyal Discover Card members since 1986, and my mother once charged a new car on her discover card. On May 17th a charge came through from a company called Pharmacy Gold Card with various charges totaling 85 dollars. My mother contacted Discover and they gave her an 800 number, one of the cues for this number is to discontinue service, but you have to have a membership number or a credit card # to discontinue. They have no physical address except Merritt on the River Zip 06850. I can't belive Discover is so heartless What can we do? My number is 904-316-1439, I am in Jacksonville Fl. My parents are in Stockbridge Ga. I am very curious if this company is ligit or not, and is this the first complaint?
