Aug 06, 2008 -- Cash for your old electronics

Many of us are drowning in e-waste with so many electronics in our lives. There's a new website called VenJuvo.com that may help you de-clutter your life and possibly earn a little extra cash.

VenJuvo.com is an online trade-in center that pays for pre-owned electronics -- everything from cell phones, mp3 players, computers and cameras to GPS systems and gaming consoles. You simply go to the site, enter the info on what you have and get a quote for what they'll pay you. They pay for shipping and you typically receive your payment in 3 business days.

For items that no longer have value, VenJuvo.com also offers free e-cycling. This is just one of many examples of entrepreneurs exploring e-cycling. Clark once happened upon a cell phone recycling operation when he was shooting a TV story. The operation collected useless cell phones to be reconditioned or stripped for parts.

CellforCash.com and CellPhoneTradeIns.com are a couple of sites where you can try unloading your old cell phone for cash.

UPDATE: Several days after we ran our report, The Wall Street Journal had a story suggesting the following additional sites:
Gazelle.com
TechForward.com (requires a fee to lock in a value)
MyBoneYard.com

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Gazelle.Com Rip Off
Gazelle. com states that they will pay CASH for your used electronics so they want you to send them in. You hear nothing but when you do hear from them they already "recycled" the items and you get NOTHING.
    What A RIPOFF
  • cel phones
They have places that take old phones and repair if needed and send them to our troops.
  • Cellforcash.com
$4 for a phone that retailed for $100?
I'd rather throw it in the trash. It would cost me more to ship it to the theives!!
  • cellphonetradeins.com
cellphonetradeins.com is a rip off. Read email below:

    Hello,

They are not inspected by a single person. We have a warehouse of
over 20 inspectors. The item is inspected by a minimum of 3 people
    before the inspection is finalized.

    Kind regards

    Hi,

I am highly disappointed in your assessment of my cell phones. One was only used for a period of three months and was in good condition. The other was in fair condition and in working order. The broken hinge is shocking news and may have happen during shipment. I applaud your efforts and message of recycling for the better good of the Earth, however, these efforts and message are lost when they are at the expense of people's personal property. I highly suggest that a third party appraisal is used to verify conditions of cell phone. Appraisals done by the very same people who have interest in the company is unethical and only becomes corrupt.

  • VenJuvo.com
They only offer a VERY limited list of wht they will accept...andmostof it hs to be relatively new.
  • GOLD in recycling old electronics
There is a small but not insignificant amount of precious metals involved in various kinds of electronics. "Thrift Store Prospecting" and "Platinum Recycling Made Easy" both give useful lists of WHERE these metals can be found in everyday items, AND explain how to recover the valuable stuff. Interestingly, industry sources were quoted saying that 25,013,000 ounces of gold were discarded worldwide in 2002 alone.
  • What a useless website
Sometimes i wish Clark wouldnt have his staff post stuff because its so crap, like venjuvo.com
  • eye glasses
I ordered glasses from Zinni. They were a great value. You have to pay attention to the specs of the glasses and frames you order and it took several weeks to get my order. The prescription was right on and I am very pleased.
  • Cell phone recycling
    You might also want to consider taking a look at;
    http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/
for a good way to get rid of your old cellphones.
  • clarks sometime bad advice
Clark has been sniffing a little bit to much Leer jet fuel on this one. Venjuvo is joke.
  • recycling old cell phones
can't the ones who buy these old cell phones actually get information off them like bank/card no's and the like that have been keyed in?
  • Toshiba Television
Only seeing a flat horizontal line across the screen is a loss of vertical deflection on the set and something that can be fixed at any television shop.
  • VenJuvo
Too bad they don't pay $ for used PC's. Pound for pound, PC's are one of the biggest electronic-type land fill itmes. I went to their site and they only want things like MP3 players, Games systems, Smart phones & the like.
  • Toshiba Television
When turned on all you see is a bright line acroos the screen. Don't know if it can be fixed, maybe you have a suggestion. What would be the price you would buy it for?
  • old cell phones
I donate old cell phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, a great organization (www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com). They have many drop off sites or you can mail in.
  • Old cell phones
Check with your local battered womens shelter. They give them to women because they can call 911 w/o paying phone service
  • cash for old electronics
RIP-OFF ALERT! RIP-OFF ALERT! C'mon, Clark! Craigslist and ebay would yield much better offerings than this outfit. If you're not tech savvy, don't suggest techie things. Stick with what you're good at... offering financial advice.
  • Used Cells
Amazing! I have been wondering for a long time now what can I do with my used cell phones when I'm finished with them. I like this latest article. Thanks

  • cash for old electronics
None of these websites are worth anything. You may as well sell your electronic on ebay. You can at least get a fair price this way. Clark should really try some of these things before he recommends them. On the site venjuvo.com they don't seem to want any "old electronics".
  • Old Electronics-Stereo's etc
This 'Grama' loves electronics, and has ? unfortunately! held on to various systems for sooo long/well kept/storage. One beautiful all solid wood TEAC set/receiver....is Not digital rather bulb type. Has always run excellent. I have floor speakers; reel to reel; receiver; other pieces. Why saving? To one day sell to someone interested in the older electronics. Suggestions?=contact:

  • Cash for "Old" Electronics
    These people want "New" electronics!
  • Broken phones and idods
In case you dont know...My son had a zune that was a year and a half old it got broken at school. for his birthday I bought him a ipod off ebay for 50. less than a store, and I bought the zune for 50.00 less, never had a problem with it. I was trying to figure out what to do with the broken zune and so I put it on ebay as a broken zune and I recieved 51.00 for it. I also sold a psp2 that was broken and got 56.00 for it. Go figure ...you know I had to replace them so I created my own reward. Love your web site and all your tips, just thought I would give you another. Thanks Stacy
  • VenJuvo.com
    Waste of time:
This outfit ONLY wants game players, I pods, HD Tv's and a few other highly current and popular devices; No TV's, no Stero equipment, no nuthin older probably than one yr.
Clark Howard ought to know better.
There was a time (before he became a multi millionaire) when his advice actually had practical value to consumers.
  • Cell phone recycling
If you'd rather donate your phone, go to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com. This group converts old phones to pre-paids and sends them to soldiers so they can call home. Look at the FAQs - they may dump the phone data for you or help you with that. I first heard of this site on Clark's radio show.
  • Old Stereo Systems (good)
Is there a place to sell these items or what kind of recyling place? This information refers to a very good system.
  • Electronics
I donate all my all old electronics and take the write off.
It doesn't seem to me worth the time involved in trying to sell these items. Instead I would rather a charitable organization have it something that was of value to me becomes of value to someone else
  • VenJuvo
Glad this newsletter came out...Been trying to contact Benjuvo since the broadcast which doesn't exist. Hadn't yet come up with the right permutation of the spelling.
  • What about Ebay?
If your stuff still has value, why not sell it on Ebay?
  • VenJuvo
I was hoping they'd take old desk top computers, but it doesn't appear they do.
  • credit freeze
what is the procedure for doing a credit freeze?
  • cell phones
cellfoecash.com is a rep off we sent phone to them over a year ago annd never got even a call back have tried to call or email them and no reply
  • Cell Phone Data
The concern with cell phone recycle is the data on the phone. Often it is hard to be sure the data is erased, and many end up being smashed and trashed instead.
