Of all companies, McDonald's is trying to be a leader in nutrition. The Golden Arches will voluntarily post calorie counts for everything they sell at the drive through, in addition to inside their locations on the menu board.

All chain restaurants with 20 locations or more will be required to post calories counts in their stores. But McDonald's is the first one I know of to extend compliance to the drive through. (Editor's note: A reader since wrote in to say Taco Bell has been doing the same for about a year now.)

So you will be able to make a healthy choice if you wish at McDonald's from the comfort of your own car.

When I go to a McDonald's in Manhattan, I've noticed that very few people pay any attention to the calorie counts. But I'm one of the people who actually considers the info. Something like only 8% or 9% of people pay attention to this stuff.

In fact, I've stopped eating the Sausage McMuffin with egg (450 calories) and switched to an Egg McMuffin (300 calories). Now comes word that McDonald's is rolling out an Egg McMuffin with egg white on a whole grain muffin, Canadian bacon, and white cheddar. It's going to be called the Egg White Delight and will weigh in at 260 calories.

Meanwhile, 80% of the items on McDonald's menu are now at or below 400 calories, according to what I read in The New York Post. I know that sounds impossible, but it's true. Still, a Big Mac, medium fries, and a Coke will cost you 1,140 calories.
