Tuition discounts available at some private colleges

By Clark Howard

The cost of a college education may be getting cheaper, not more expensive, at some private colleges.

A new study cited in The Wall Street Journal found that 45% of last year's incoming class of freshman received discounts on tuition. The reality is colleges have priced themselves out of the market after years of tuition hikes.

Second tier private colleges are falling 20% below enrollment targets as the marketplace pulls away from high costs. So if you're on the bubble about going to a certain school and cost is everything, this is time to negotiate a tuition discount. You may be able to close a gap simply by pushing for a better package from a college. It's worth a try.
