Can't afford to keep Rover or Fluffy on their expensive medication from the vet? A couple of retailers are selling common pet meds for as little as $4.

Many years ago, people were taking medications designed for pets as way to save money because of the high cost of prescription drugs for humans. Now that situation has turned completely on its head. Human drugs have become affordable thanks to the wide availability of $4 generics at many retailers.

But what about in the pet market??

When you go to the vet and they write a prescription, they typically also fill it for you at a high markup That's created an opportunity for Kroger to offer $4 generic meds for cats and dogs at all of its pharmacies. Meanwhile, Target is also doing pet-only $4 generic meds in nearly 700 pharmacies around the country.

This is great news. If you have a pet, you know that taking your dog or cat to the vet is big money. Now you can see if your vet will price match Target and Kroger. If not, you know where to get your prescription filled!

On the question of pet insurance, Consumer Reports has run the numbers and says as a general rule that it is not a good use of your money. According to them, you're better off taking what you would pay for pet insurance and using it pay for care for your pet as needed.
