Parents failing kids on exercise and eating

Parents overwhelmingly say they do a good job at providing a healthy upbringing for their kids. Yet a new study I read in USA Today reports that's anything but the case.

In a new survey, 9 out of 10 parents say they provide a healthy home environment for kids in terms of eating right and providing opportunities for exercise. But two-thirds of kids age 5 to 10 eat big amounts of junk food every week, according to the USA Today report. And only 1 in 7 kids eats a decent amount of fruits or veggies. Furthermore, one-third of kids are overweight and at risk of adult onset diabetes and other grown-up ailments.

So what parents say they do and what actually happens are worlds apart. Here's my assignment for you: Instead of sitting down to watch TV and snack with your kids, why not get up and go outside? Throw a ball. Go to a park. Just do something.

When I was young, I was obsessed with shooting baskets. We lived on a hill and if I threw an air ball, the ball was soon 200 yards down the road with me running after it. That made me polish my skills quickly.

As a parent, setting an example is absolutely key. Your kids will benefit and you will benefit too.
