There's a new cop on the beat overseeing the credit reporting industry.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is now accepting complaints if you've been put on ignore by Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion over errors on your credit report.

The CFPB can assist with the following complaints:

• Incorrect information on a credit report
• Credit reporting agency's investigation
• Improper use of a credit report
• Being unable to get a copy of a credit score or file
• Problems with credit monitoring or identify protection services

But know that this is a last resort kind of thing. You have to first use the credit report agency's official process for disputing an error on your report. Only if that doesn't work should you bring in the CFPB.

Meanwhile, the same organization will have new oversight over debt collectors beginning Jan. 2, 2013. They'll be cracking down on already illegal practices used by a scummy sliver of the overall industry.

That includes threats of arrest; telling kids their parents are going to jail over unpaid debts; lawsuits filed against a debt that's outside of statute; physical threats; and more.
