The number of distracted walking injuries involving people engrossed in gadgets of all kinds has quadrupled in 7 years.

A new report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission finds that 1,152 people were treated for distracted walking in 2011. Distracted walking can be defined as anything from walking while texting, tweeting, gaming, talking, surfing the web or listening to headphones.

I was at HLN for Evening Express and, while walking back from makeup, I saw a producer checking her Blackberry and walking right into somebody else in the hallway. Neither person was hurt, but both were stunned momentarily.

This kind of thing happens all the time. If you go to an emergency room, you can hear from them how many people come in from walking and not talking, but texting or surfing.

We don't have eyes in the back of our heads or bionic vision. There's so much you can do on a smart phone, but it's not smart at all to get injured while you're doing it.
