New beta site allows unlimited free international phone calls

Want to make unlimited free international phone calls? It's now possible thanks to a new beta service called FreePhone2Phone.com.

First, a little background: Clark's Graveyard is where ideas that I thought were great go to die. One corpse you'll find there is a defunct service called Freeway that was one of my favorites back in the 1990s. When it was operational, Freeway offered free long distance by allowing users to call in and listen to ads in exchange for free long distance calling. Mind you, this was back in the day before VoIP and cell phones when long distance was still an expensive proposition, unlike today.

But international calling remains expensive in 2011. So now FreePhone2Phone.com allows you to call into a local access number and listen to ads in exchange for 10 minutes of free international phone calling to about 60 different countries. That's all there is to it; you don't even need a computer. I like to think of it as the son of Freeway. (Editor's note: Let's hope FreePhone2Phone.com meets a better fate than Freeway!)

One caveat: In many places in the world, you can't call a cell phone for free, only a landline, because of what's called the "caller pays" system. As a result, FreePhone2Phone.com only offers service to landlines internationally, not cell phones.
