The next time you've lost faith in the future, just remember the names of 17-year-old Eric Chen, 16-year-old Ann Makosinski, and 15-year-old Viney Kumar. All three are teenagers still in school who the 2013 Google Science Fair.

Ann won for developing a flashlight that runs off your body heat instead of a battery. Viney has a technology that warn drivers when a policecar or ambulance is approaching from any direction.

Chen, meanwhile, was the grand prize winner. He's doing groundbreaking research into flu drugs.

Again, these are teenagers! So if you ever get depressed about the state of the world, look to their example. Don't be a victim of static analysis, where you only see how things are right now and see no basis for hope or progress. We as humans continually make life better, faster, and cheaper over time!
