A new self-inflating tire is being rolled out to truck fleets with the eventual goal of making the technology available to consumers.

The benefit to truck fleets will be twofold. They will save money by reducing accidents and save money on fuel expenses.

The Plain Dealer  reports Goodyear received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop the new tires.

Whenever gas prices go up, local reporters around the country always do stories about getting junk out of your trunk and properly inflating your tires. But almost nobody remembers to do that. So having this functionality built into a tire automatically is great.
